I can't make this a print you goofballs! It's an animation- Quit requesting that I do! XD
Okay, so that hour between classes is very boring. So I got out my tiny little 3.5 x 5 sketchbook and decided I'd mess around and try to animate a little. I really didn't expect anything decent to come out of it- since I usually work in Flash and that onionskinning tool is my saving grace.
HOWEVER. Somehow I managed to make a halfway decent little animation. If I ever get the time, I'm going to finish this up- Colored, shaded, with a bg. It'll take some time- but hey, it'll be fun. XD
Anyway- critique is ENCOURAGED. Any tips from folks who really know what they're doing would be most welcome.
EDIT: Hit Download to view- otherwise you'll just get a larger version of the preview image.
EDIT2: Slowed it down a little bit- any better?

You did a great job on this. I've noticed maybe he stands up a little fast but maybe he's in a hurry, I dunno if thats how you wanted it. Other than that the body motion is smooth and well animated!

The will not protect you! Zorak is ma sex muffin! I am currently and completely lol! All hail !!
The peoples love their smoothness. 8| I'll have to agree it's looking nice and fluid, very much like a fox.
Your timing is alright, but I think I'd push it just a little more so it reads. I like the pause when the fox gets up... make add him looking around or something before moving forward, just a little something to set it apart from the walk forward.
The arcs when the fox stands up are good, but when he heads towards the camera, they jump a little bit. I might even avoid having the fox go straight towards the camera, but it could work, just make sure the head at least follows a smooth arc towards the left and down towards the center.
You might want to put anticipation in there too... like when the fox stands up, have him go down first, then up. Once he stands, maybe throw his head back a bit and really make it dynamic, then settle into the standing pose. Whatever your character's about to do, make them do the opposite a bit first. don't go over-the-top, just a little bit of it will give the character more life.
other things are kind of subtle.. the frames labeled thirteen and fourteen... the fox steps forward and his paw goes down, but his shoulders and head stay pretty much in the same place. you lose the feeling of the weight going on the foot that way. sink him down on the foot a little, even though he's coming towards the camera. also, you're kind of holding the tail and waiting to move it until the end. A fox especially would move their tail back and forth a lot more. swish the tail back and forth, maybe just a little faster than the body movements. that would be a lot more realistic. :3
one more thing, did you animate it this way? .-. generally it's a good idea for your health and sanity not to animate something this clean before you ask for feedback. because then assholes like me want you to practically do it over, and you cry because you spent so much time making it look nice. ;_; animate rough and loose until you've nailed all the movements. Then make it pretty.
gah sorry that's a lot. DDDDDD: I really do like this and I want to encourage you to keep working on it. it could be splendiforous. or something.
Wow, this is awesome sis! Nicely done, and in less than 40 frames too :3 Very smooth lines too

*devours information* Thank you thank you thank you!
I do realize it's definitely short quite a few frames, I'll give it another try on actual animation paper next with your suggestions. I also have a bit of a question:
Okay, I know it's not easy to see with the rough animation, (and the fox certainly comes towards the screen much too quickly for the mood trying to be portrayed) but I wanted the character to seem alert and a bit hesitant- even nervous about moving in the direction it moves. How could I better show those feelings of the fox in my animation?
Again, thank you so much! 8D I really appreciate the advice!

When did it suddenly become cool to hate everything? It's a growing problem, especially in the entertainment world, and no one benefits from an increasingly hard to please, pessimistic audience.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community.
